One thing we can always count on is the continuation and revolution of social media and technology. Sometimes, social media isn’t always a positive Interaction but one thin I have noticed is how social media platforms like TikTok have lead to the revival of a large amount of music and it has introduced a mass amount of people into some songs that have molded their sub-genres in the rock scene. Today, I want to dive into 11 specific songs that I have seen a revival, in a sense, and how modern day social media has brought some songs back to the top of the charts! Which honestly is incredible. Let’s dive into it!
And of course – I will but my small disclaimer: the following are my opinions and take-a-ways and in no way am I trying to pretend to be an expert in the genres, of the band, or anything of that nature. Just simply a girl who enjoys the chugs and riffs, death growls, screams, some clean vocals here and there and just raw emotion being portrayed through my favorite genre of music. I also am not going to sit here and use words I found as synonyms for the real words I originally used to make me seem smarter, more elegant or anything of that nature. You get what you get – so let’s get into this.
Starting off with an absolute banger of a song – In Bloom by Nirvana. A classic right? Jumping us back into the 90’s grunge scene, I have seen an uptick in usage of this song between musicians showcasing their ability to play the guitar or drums along with the song. I also have seen the occasional addition of this song for a little thirst trap here and there (which let me say – nothin’ wrong with a little ass for some cash, get your bag, baby).
Next up, we saw a significant climb in Mary on A Cross by Ghost in 2022 and see a bit of climb still today. A newer song for Ghost but I think this was one of my favorite songs released by Ghost when they released their album Seven Inches of Satanic Panic. A lot of people originally started tearing into this song for being blasphemous and for the band having “satanic undertones” but let’s be honest…. If you know Ghost you know their whole image and themes involve satanic undertones. However, the song eventually gained traction in a different key in both a higher, sped up version as well as a slowed and reverb. The sound was used for a lot of different trends but now a lot of users are plugging in their videos to show the nostalgia of how life was when this song was trending in 2022.
An absolutely amazing song I have seen gain traction and Creep by Radiohead. I have loved this song for years and seeing more people discover it, even through a TikTok trend is great, because I am no gatekeeper over here, y’all! So Creep is probably Radiohead’s most recognizable song and from their debut album, its been huge for YEARS but there has been a resurgence due to the usage of the song on social media as well as use in pop culture singing competitions. Right now, the song is being used for a trend to show transition for people’s weight loss, change in lifestyle, difference in appearances etc. and it is so fun to see the uniqueness of everyone!
We are jumping to 2009 with the next one but All I Wanted by Paramore has kept steady popularity since release we saw it take to TikTok for the girlies showcasing their appearance changes with hair, makeup, and clothes. Paramore followed suite making a TikTok of their own before going on Jimmy Fallon. The trend shows individuals showing their before, getting close to one eye, switching to the next, and completing the transition of showing their after of what changed.
I wanted to mention this next one but I want to caution that I AM AWARE this originally blew up from Stranger Things but then the internet lizards took to TikTok and blew it up even further. Originally from 1977 and one of the Big Four, Eddie shreds on the guitar to Master of Puppets by Metallica in season four of Stranger Things and EVERYONE took to social media for edits and to show they can shred to the song as well. Over 30 years after release, we saw Master of Puppets hit the billboards one more time.
The next song is literally a perfect song to be released and a wee-bit older than our friends above and one that I see everywhere, Dreams by Fleetwood Mac is a viral phenomenon for the TikTok pals. I see it a lot for people just putting it as a sound for their day-to-day activities and showing the softness of their lives. It’s so fitting too because it fits with softness due to their soft rock nature.
System of A Down’s Lonely Day has kept steadiness as well so its not like there’s a huge resurgence but we are seeing more of SOAD again especially with them touring with Avenged Sevenfold after their limited touring for the last few years. Lonely Day became a majorly used sound on social media for the lyrics “And if you go, I wanna go with you. And if you die, I wanna die with you.” As a large amount of people showcase their relationship with this song and many going to the lengths of getting couples tattoo of the lyrics.
Right now, I am seeing SO many people engaging in the usage of Blue Dream by Dance Gavin Dance. So – let me preface. Johnny Craig is a shit person. I KNOW THIS. It is undeniable his vocals are incredible though. From his work in DGD to Slaves to all his solo work, his vocals are versatile and raw. The videos I see showcase the change from the verse to the chorus and the alt adults came out of the woodworks for this one! Now granted, a lot of the videos with this are talking about Johnny but there are a lot of videos just singing/dancing to the *vibes* and it sure is gaining traction again. But lets not forget, support DGD not Johnny Craig 🙂
Deftones. Ohhhhhh, the beautiful band Deftones. Incredible. Amazing. Perfect. One of the best bands have maintained their popularity but have gained more fans from the inclusion of many of their songs in the social media scene. There are many transitions that include the beginning of My Own Summer (Shove It) as well as transition trends with Change (In The House of Flies). I’ll tell you what though, the alt/emo/goth scene on TikTok are down bad for Deftones.
A huge comeback I have seen are the FRAT BOYS LOVING CREED? I love this you guys. Cruises, sold out tours, and a literal revival of their songs back to the charts, it’s all hilariously amazing. One Last Breath soared – literally. Memes coming through on Facebook, lip sync videos blasted, and we all come together to say Creed literally slaps, even if they are “divorced dad rock.” Can we do this with Nickleback too so y’all and stop pretending they’re bad or embarrassing?
My last one is one I will say, Cruella Morgan, I think this is all thanks to you. King for A Day by Pierce the Veil. This was a transition phenomenon and Cruella started it. It began in 2022 and at the same time was when Stranger Things started a revival of Master of Puppets by Metallica and Running Up The Hill by Kate Bush and King for A Day surpassed them both. I remember going to see Fit for A King and I Prevail in Wisconsin and PTV were there and the crowd change before and after PTV went on was INSANE. You would have thought PTV were the headliners. It was an amazing show and very nostalgic for me because I remember when King for A Day was originally released and seeing them preform at Warped Tour (the good ol’ days). This introduced a transition trend too with Pass The Nirvana and PTV came back with their most recent album The Jaws of Life.
Honorable Mentions: No particular songs blew up but can we talk about the incredible rise of Bad Omens and Sleep Token due to TikTok?? I am in no way condoning the embarrassing shit some of the fans do by sexually harassing Noah Sebastian from Bad Omens or those who are trying to dox Vessel and the members of Sleep Token. If you’re one of those people, and you are reading this – knock it the fuck off. On the positive side, these two bands deserve the beauty that has come from the masses recognizing the talent that has come from these individuals. Am I little sad concert tickets are more expensive now, lines are a little longer, and there is a little bit of a lull in music making due to touring, I am proud to see the growth in these bands.
This was a shorter one but boy was it fun! I love seeing artists gain new fans, grow, and have fun in our modern day and age. I am not very pro-social media because I have done extensive research and studying on the negative effects it has on individuals mental health but this right here? This is the joy within social media. The expressionism, the community, the diversity, and the exposure. I love that part and I hope to continue to see individuals see more beauty in the music and have a small creative spark with it! Thanks for hangin’ folks!
